1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display (LCD) device, and more particularly, to a transflective liquid crystal display device having low power consumption and high visibility.
2. Description of the Related Art
A liquid crystal display (LCD) device has been widely used for a monitor of a personal computer or a television.
A twisted nematic (TN) type LCD has been mostly used in the past. However, in the TN-type LCD, a light transmittance is very low. When a data voltage applied to a pixel electrode is increased, a transmittance of the TN-type LCD is increased. However, in the TN-type LCD, a contrast ratio is decreased.
To solve the above problems, a LCD having an optically compensated bend (OCB) mode has been developed. The OCB-mode LCD has a wider viewing angle and a higher contrast ratio than those of the TN-type LCD.
In the OCB-mode LCD, a liquid crystal is filled between a pixel electrode and a common electrode which are formed on a same substrate and both of which are made of a transparent conductive material.
The pixel electrode and the common electrode have a structure in which a plurality of projections and depressions are alternately arranged. A direction of a first-group projection and a direction of a first-group depression are at an angle of 90 degrees. A direction of a second-group projection and a direction of a second-group depression are at an angle of 45 degrees. A direction of a third-group projection and a direction of a third-group depression are at an angle of 135 degrees. In addition, a direction of a fourth-group projection and a direction of a fourth-group depression are at an angle of 225 degrees. A alignment of liquid crystal molecules is changed due to a fringe field formed between a fringe projection and a fringe depression of each of the projections and depressions.
An LCD having such a structure is referred to as an OCB-mode transflective LCD.
